Swiss National Day is the equivalent of Canada, July 1. Their celebrations seem to involve fire... a lot.
But first, there is an annual race here, run from Aigle in the valley, up to the peak of La Berneuse, and back down to Leysin Village. Its about 22km in length (a half-marathon) and has about a mile vertical up, and a half-mile vertical down. Sounds crazy, right?? But about 30 students and staff from KLAS ran it this year. Justin, a student from MMC also participated. They took anywhere from 3 to 4.5 hours to complete the course. Congrats to them!!
MRD, Justina (from MMC), Mr. Watanabe (the principal) and Taiga (KLAS student) ran the 11km smaller course. MRD was last of the 4, at 1:33, and Justina was first at around 1:13. It was a warm, warm day for a run. Eeesh.
Students from KLAS were all over the mountain, helping marshall the course, being supporters and cheerer-on-ers. Good spirit.
Since it was Swiss Day, you of course need fireworks. Was cool to see the various displays shooting off in all the towns/villages across the valley. Our show here in Leysin started after 10pm. The KLAS students took the opportunity to get dressed up. They were kind enough to dress up our students, too. Seemed like a good time was had by all.
